So what is this site about, anyways?

At its core, this site/blog/Substack/whateveryouwannacallit is a collection of thoughts from a thirtysomething Chinese American software developer living in Atlanta. And I want to unpack exactly why I chose the words “thirtysomething”, “Chinese American”, “software developer”. Look out for that article soon.

Okay, you’re some Asian dude who wants to opine on things. What kinda things?

There are a lot of subjects that I have an interest in. So you can expect to read things about money, politics, current events, culture, sports, basically the entire gamut of human experience. However, my intent is not to spew whatever words come to mind into the ether willy-nilly.

I want what I write to be interesting, informative, edifying, and above all, valuable to you, the reader. And while I suspect that my readership will ultimately end up skewing male and relatively well educated, I want my writing to be valuable to just about everyone.

That seems both ambitious and pretentious. How are you gonna pull that off?

I can’t be all things to all people. But I can be something to some person at a particular time in their life. That’s why this blog/site/Substack/whatever isn’t going to focus on any one subject or writing style. There will be highbrow material that will be extremely dry to the vast majority of people but speaks true to a tiny minority. There’s gonna be some lowbrow shit written in a somewhat highbrow manner that will make latter cringe in embarrassment.

If you’ve gotten this far, maybe I’m already providing some value to you.

Eh, maybe I’m just bored.

And maybe by reading through this unorthodox About section, I’m doing something towards alleviating your boredom.

Let’s shake off this weirdly meta bullshit and get back on track. Is there any kind of ideology or style that I should be aware of?

I do have various political and personal ideologies that will inform what I write and how I write. But because I want to provide value to you, the time and energy that I spend in writing revolves around one concept: getting you to be more intentional and to think more about everything, whether it’s about yourself or the people and things around you.

I’m getting a little confused here. What is this about?

It’s my perception that the vast majority of people are sleepwalking through life. Lumbering from day to day and only very occasionally waking up and assessing the situation with intentionality. If my writing can get you to think something like “what am I doing and why am I doing it?” or “what are they doing and why are they doing that?”, I will be immensely satisfied about myself and hopefully very valuable to you.

Holy shit that sounds pretentious as fuck.

Perhaps, but maybe stick around and see if you learn something, either about me, yourself, or somebody else.

We’ll see. Any other housekeeping items before I ditch this joint?

One last thing. I’m writing from an American point of view. So if I say things like “the education system”, “the stock market”, assume I’m talking about the US version of those things and not whatever inferior version they have elsewhere.
